Henk de Vlieger - Aulos (2021) for two bassoons written for Jos Lammerse and Freek Sluijs. The aulos was a double-reed instrument played by the Ancient Greeks. It had two pipes and two mouthpieces, creating ‘double’ melodies. In this composition, the two bassoons move in a graceful dance, absolutely synchronized with each other, as if they were one. The melodic material has an evocative sadness and the mystical origin of the piece is unmistakable. In the middle of the work, each of the players deviates from the strictness of the synchronized dance for a few moments, but is recaptured by the strong aura of the mystical dance and its austerities, resolving the piece in perfect synchronization.
